Francisca Fernández y Malva Soto (tituladas de la Universidad de Chile): "The Presence of Winged Creatures as Mediators of the Confluence between Natural Spirituality and Religious Doctrine"
By having his consciousness opened up to a limitless reality beyond his own mind with the emergence of Transcendentalism, the subject‟s consciousness comes to inhabit every spiritual act of knowledge. During the Romantic period, in consequence, as the latitude between the inner mind and the outside world begins to diminish, nature becomes a conduct for spiritual and individual communion between the spirit and the outer realm. Therefore our subject of study for this particular congress will be “The presence of winged creatures as mediators of the confluence between natural spirituality and religious doctrine.” We will examine, in this sense, William Wordsworth‟s „To the Cuckoo‟ (1807) and Percy Bysshe Shelley‟s „To a Skylark‟ (1820) to illustrate the poets‟ innermost spiritual sensibilities by translating their encounters into angelic apparitions of earthly and divine beauty. We will conduct our analysis by means of identifying and comparing the presence of auditory and visual elements in the representation of these winged creatures within each poem and from biblical passages. For this reason, we aim at observing a parallel portrayal between the Romantic subject‟s interaction with the natural world through the use of birds and the Biblical prophet‟s coming into contact with God through angelical manifestations.

Nicolás Flores y Sandra Gutiérrez (Universidad de Chile): "Gossip and Landscape in Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter"
Gossip plays an important part in Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter because it is a phenomenon that affects all the characters throughout the novel. We can often hear the town’s voices commenting, criticising, giving opinions, and conjecturing about the private matters of the main characters. These voices form an elaborate texture in which the characters are immersed. Therefore, we argue that the gossips in the story form a space that we consider to be a relevant landscape in Hawthorne’s novel. To do this, we will be mainly drawing from Mitchell’s book Landscape and Power. The gossip landscape in the story evokes feelings in the characters, it has a symbolic value, and it serves a purpose. Thus, in this presentation, we will describe what this landscape is, what it means, and what it does. Finally, we will give some ideas for further studies on this issue.
