Abstract:

Eimear McBride’s The Lesser Bohemians (2016) is about a mind trying to piece reality and itself together. A survivor of sexual assault, 18-year-old Eily suffers from heavy dissociation and memory lapses as she struggles to fit into a new social environment and cope with both her past and her present. Structured as a first person narrative in a style often described as stream of consciousness, the novel offers a unique take on multi-level consciousness representation: it uses language to iconically portray Eily’s mental experience. In this presentation, I explore how this effect is achieved through specific syntactic resources that reflect the way in which Eily construes reality in her mind, applying Nuttall’s (2018) CG model for stylistic analysis of world construal and mind style based on Langacker’s (2008) Cognitive Grammar framework.
