Research aim
The aim of this project is to develop a novel multi-dimensional Cancer-on-a-Chip platform to analyse
cancer progression, cell pathogenicity and to test new chemotherapeutic drugs in vitro.
Summary
During this project (2016-2019), the research will be focused on the generation of a novel Cancer-on-aChip
platform to study most important steps of cancer pathogenicity (i.e. tumour-like, intravasation-like,
metastasis-like). This Cancer-on-a-Chip platform is constituted by scaffolds having different morphologies,
topologies and mechanical properties, and placed in a unique chip of a size of 20 X 20 mm. This chip has
been designed to automatize drug-screening assays, with the purpose to be used in the pharmaceutical
and biotechnological industry.
During this investigation, multiple biomaterial and nano-technology techniques will be extensively
employed, such as micro/macro-rheology, soft micropatterning and dynamic analysis of cell-hydrogels
interfaces. In addition, cells will be biophysically and physiologically characterized by traction-force and
time-lapse microscopy (confocal microscopy), cytoskeleton immunohistochemistry and cell toxicity, among
others.
PhD and/or Post-doctoral positions, and fellowships application
Dr. Leal-Egana offers support during the application process for young researchers interested in obtaining
a PhD or a Post-doctoral fellowship (i.e. Becas Chile, DAAD, DFG, Marie Curie, Humboldt foundation etc).
The PhD research will be carried out at the Institute of Biomaterials, Erlangen-Nürnberg University, under
the supervision of Prof. Boccaccini and Dr. Leal-Egaña.
Candidates
Dr. Leal-Egaña encourages creative, motivated and curious young scientists to apply for this position,
assuring high personal and professional support during the application process, as well as the possibility
to join an international multidisciplinary research group interested in looking beyond the traditional walls of
the technique and knowledge.
Deadline
The deadline for applications to DAAD fellowships is traditionally in February/March 2017 (depending on
the application country). Other deadlines will be discussed accordingly to the respective fund body (i.e.
DFG, Marie Curie, Humboldt foundation, others).
